Old Bedians appoint new senior men’s coach

We are thrilled to announce the appointment of Danny Newall (Newey) as senior men’s coach, who will work alongside Sam Larner during the upcoming season.

Newey brings a wealth of experience to Millgate Lane. An Edge Hill University graduate with coaching badges in both league and union, he spent 7 years in professional rugby league; on the coaching staff at Warrington Wolves, Oldham RLFC and the Widnes Vikings. Newey also spent 9 seasons coaching Widnes 2nd XV, amassing over 165 games in charge (with a win rate of over 70%), winning 3 trophies in the process. Firstly a league championship in 2017 and then completing a league & cup double in his final year with the club in 2023.

Senior Chairman Ben Rogerson said “we are delighted to have Newey joining our coaching team to work alongside Sam, he will bring some great experience and enthusiasm to help us achieve our goals for this season, and for our longer term plans.”

Newey had the following to say about his new role at Old Bedians:
“I’m really looking forward to the challenge of joining the club this season. I’ve had a year out of the game and I feel I’ve had a good opportunity to rest up and recharge my batteries and I’m really eager to get back into things.”

“The guys here have been absolutely fantastic with me and really opened up and convinced me to join the club. I had a number of offers on the table and I’m confident I’ve made the correct decision in joining Old Bedians. I've had some really positive conversations with the officials, coach, captain and some players in the team and I really feel I can be a great addition to the club and help things going forward. I just can’t wait to get into pre-season in July now and hopefully we can have a really good season.”

Newey will begin his role with the club immediately, he’s already been pro-active and discussed coaching plans for pre-season with Sam. He will be joining us in our first pre-season training session on Wednesday 3rd July, so we would encourage as many players as possible to come down and meet our new coach as we embark on this exciting season ahead.

We are confident that Newey’s commitment will bring a renewed sense of energy to our club, and we are truly excited to see what the club can achieve throughout the coming season.

Welcome to Old Bedians, Newey!
